Aging is tough for everyone, but it is especially tough for women. After going through so many expectations through life, it never stops. There are still expectations for appearance, attitude, and actions. Last night, at a Crosby, Stills, and Nash concert, I overheard an older women making remarks about how all of the other older women, her peers, should not be dancing or using their smart phones. That it wasn't age appropriate for them. This comment was made with the tone of voice that old women are not allowed to do anything and should not be able to do anything. So, that leaves the question of what are they allowed to do? Because this particular person would argue not much.
Wendy Trevathan argues that old women are good for many things. She discusses about how they are still a part of families and taking care of grandchildren. But, this is not comparable to being able to enjoy a concert and some wine. The different articles focus on what women can do to still be relevant within their families. They say that women can still contribute as a part of a family, but they do not discuss how women can still participate in other aspects of society. It is as if once you reach a certain age you can no longer have fun anymore or do anything you used to be able to do. Which, does not make sense because now these women have the time and means in order to be able to enjoy traveling, concerts, or anything else.
